Cape Coral TidbitsThe history of early Cape Coral begins with a warlike and fierce tribe in Native Indians known as the Calusas. However, by the time the US gained control of the region, the Calusas Indian tribe had all but vanished. In 1513, Ponce de Leon, who was a Spanish explorer, discovered Florida.
Spain deeded the land of Redfish Point to the US in 1821. The US forgave the $5 million of debts that Spain owed our nation in exchange. Along with runaway slaves who were harbored by the Seminole Indians the white settlers arrived in droves after Florida became an organized territory in 1822. However, there were clashes between the white settlers and the Seminole Indians.
In 1845, when Florida became a state, the land was patented to Florida. The railroad companies bought much of the land from the state, who in turn, sold much of this land to individuals and many different companies including the Matlacha Cattle Company. One of these individuals was a man named Franklin Miles of Alka Seltzer and Miles Laboratories fame, who, in 1910, purchased some of this land. Mr. Miles primarily used the land for hunting. There was an abundance of ducks, wild turkeys, deer, and wild hogs. At that time, Cape Coral was populated by fisherman, rustlers, cattlemen, loggers, and homesteaders.
Granville Keller, Ogden Phipps, and Franklin Miles sold this land to the Rosen family for $678,000. The history and life in Cape Coral was about to change as the result of their newly formed company, Gulf Guaranty Land and Title Company, which became known later the Gulf American Land Corporation.
There was a considerable amount of chopping through the vegetation, pine trees, and mangroves involved in clearing this land. The men had to battle alligators, panthers, and rattlesnakes and had to sleep in tents. There was hard and thick limestone to cut through, muddy pools, salt marshes, and the heat was brutal.
The earth was used to build up the property to the required elevation of five foot six inches above sea level and canals were dug out with dredges. So many lakes and lakes were developed that that Gulf American never had to purchase any fill dirt.
One of the most effective selling techniques was the offer of free airplane rides when a fleet of airplanes were brought in by a crack team of hotshot salesmen. Over the lots that customers purchased from the air, sacks of flour were dropped.
The Yacht Club was built with a clubhouse, swimming pool, and beach, after many different houses were constructed. The Yacht Club had a very popular teen club that didnít allow adults unless they were accompanied by a teenager. The Rosen family also had a golf course and country club constructed in order to make the community even more desirable. There were boat races, festivals, golf tournaments, and beauty pageants.
Salesmen were sent overseas to sell land, primarily to US citizens in Germany, Japan, England, and Italy. The reason that there is such a large German community in Cape Coral is because many Germans also purchased land.
The sale of land topped $5 million dollars during the first five months. It was difficult to keep up with the demand of the good life of golfing, boating, fishing, lounging, and swimming when restaurants and motel were required in order to accommodate home buyers, in addition to the requirement for model homes.
Every Sunday afternoon, Gulf American provided the gas and the boat for waterskiing. In 1964, the famous Rose Gardens opened, which was another way that the Rosen family attracted the crowds to Cape Cora.
Resident and prospects were entertained for six years by the Garden and Pavilion of Patriots, the Aloha Garden, the Rose garden, the Porpoise Pool, and the Waltzing Waters. However these entertainment venues became just too expensive to maintain. In 1970, the Rosen family elected to sell Gulf American to a finance company in Pennsylvania known as GAC (General Acceptance).
The year 1970 also brought the incorporation of Cape Coral as a city. However, GAC didnít have the vision that the Rosen family had and problems such as declining land sales and ever increasing costs. In 1975 the company went bankrupt.
However, there was continued building in Cape Coral, which became one of the fastest regions in Florida. It was also one of the hardest hit communities in the nation from the latest economic crisis. However, there are still some great values in properties and homes. The other reason to invest or relocate to Cape Coral is the future plans for the community. .
There are plans for Cape Coral that include improving the downtown section into a beautiful area alongside landscaped canals that will attract businesses and people that will offer apartments, office spaces, restaurants, shops, bike paths, greenways, and parks.
The history of Cape Coral history is unique. It is part Hollywood and part Wild West that is complete with a tropical flavor. The relaxation and the excitement continues from boom to bust and back to boom again.
